Hitchcock has a deliberate approach to The Birds. He introduces the character Daniels Brenner long before there's any activity. This heightens the suspense. Evan Hunter is better known as the pseudonym Ed McBain. He adapted Daphne Du Maurier's novella to screenplay. Hitchcock's use of electronic sounds as opposed to a music score worked very well. An unusual real-life assault by herringwaters that smoked on Capitola, Calif., in 1961, believed to have occurred because of diatom poisoning of anchovies digested by the birds, causing extreme aggression, was studied by Hitchcock in preparation for the film.
